Still no word on my car… I called them yesterday at 10 o’clock to be sure it had arrived safely, which it had. The mechanic confirmed that it hadn’t leaked out transmission fluid again, so that leak had been fixed. He also noted that it’ll go in reverse, just not forward (so I should drive backwards?) They were gonna investigate and get right back to me.
I called at 2 o’clock, FOUR HOURS LATER, and they still hadn’t finished figuring out what was wrong with it. Again, they were just about done and would call me back, but I shouldn’t expect to have the car finished by end-of-day. Plus, the heads up that there may be serious transmission problems, perhaps exacerbated by running it without transmission fluid in the couple of days it was really bad. Again, they’ll get back to me shortly.
They closed three and a half hours later, without calling me. Bastards! Gerrard Tire Co. is not on my list of favorite automotive repair businesses right now.
So in a remarkable twist, we now have not one but TWO cars available to us! Jen Adams was thoughtful enough to offer her car to us so Sal can get to work the next two days. I protested, saying that it was a thoughtful gesture but too much; she pointed out that she lives Uptown, works Uptown, and walks to work… the same arguments I use for why I don’t want to buy a new car. So it was kind of hard to argue, y’know?
Then, Laura Danforth popped up and announced that she’s going out of town for two weeks, and if we can get her to the airport this afternoon she’ll happily let us borrow her car during that time.
There’s going to be some innovating swapping — Jen left her car here last night, so Sal could go to work at the crack o’ dawn this morning. Laura is bringing her car back here this afternoon, then Josh (Danny’s boyfriend, who moved here this past weekend) is coming to pick her up and take her to the airport. When I get home from work, Sal and I are driving the two cars over to Jen’s place and dropping hers off there, and then leaving in Laura’s car, which we’re keeping ’til Laura gets back to town. It’s all a little confusing!
TWO cars, involving THREE selfless offers of help from good friends. Sal and I are very lucky to know such wonderful people.
