God Hates Shrimp

Unless you’re reading my blog for the first time, you probably already know that I take umbrage with religious people using the teachings of The Good Book to justify their prejudice against gays and lesbians.  The worst extreme of this can be found in hateful groups like the Westboro Baptist Church, which teaches that US soldiers’ deaths are a sign of God’s vengeance for tolerance of homosexuals.

Yes, these are the guys that protest at soldiers’ funerals, picketing and saying that God condemned the deceased because we’re a “fag-loving country.”

Fortunately, there’s some semblance of balance in the universe.  For every website like http://www.godhatesfags.com (the address of the assholes mentioned above), there’s a website like  www.godhatesshrimp.com.

These geniuses counter the ignorance of hateful bigots with humor and wit, and use the same source for their material: the Bible.

Anti-gay religious rhetoric often points to the Book of Leviticus, which includes these two quotes:  “Thou shalt not lie with man, as with woman: it is an abomination” and “If a man lies with a man as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.  They shall surely be put to death.  Their blood shall be upon them.”

The same Book of the Bible also condemns eating SHRIMP as an Abomination: “But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you.” and “They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination.” and “Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you.”

So, the mavericks (yes, liberals can use that word too) at God Hates Shrimp go and protest alongside religious fundamentalists, carrying signs that mimic (and mock) those of the idiot fundies chanting their hateful ignorance.  Check out these two photos:

There’s also another terrific website at www.fallwell.com that highlights some of the close-minded bigotry of the Reverend Jerry Falwell.  Rev. Falwell thinks gays and lesbians are sinning against God by being themselves, and that anything other than heterosexuality is aberrant behavior that can be changed through prayer and therapy.

There’s a brilliant page there showing all manner of other prohibitions in Leviticus. Some samples:

  • Cursing your mother or father is grounds for being put to death.
  • “Lying with a woman” while she has her menstrual period is grounds for banishment for both the man and the woman.
  • Owning slaves from other nations is specifically encouraged in Leviticus.
  • Cutting the hair at the sides of your head, or clipping off the edges of your beard, is a thou-shalt-not here also.
  • Eating swine, aka pig, is forbidden.  No ham omelets or barbeque pork for you!
  • Planting two kinds of seed in one field, or wearing clothes made of blends of two kinds of material, is a no-no in Leviticus as well.  (That cotton/polyester blend will send you to HELL!)

Honestly, it amazes me that people are comfortable using Scripture to justify their brainwashed bigotry and prejudice.  If those same fundamentalists tried to justify killing disobedient children or reinstating slavery, saying the Bible told them it was okay, they’d be mocked all the way to jail (if not a mental institution!)

And yet, it’s perfectly acceptable for you to get on television and condemn people for not following the outdated Bible verse that supports your ignorance.

And of course, to then demand that viewers send you money.  Because God wants us to fund your message of hate and intolerance.

Being from the midwest, I have been familiar with the evildoing of the Westboro Baptist Church for years – before they made their hater mainstream by protesting soldiers’ funerals. You have to give them credit for being idiots, there is no better way to alienate the reasonable masses in the US than by protesting our fighting heroes.
