You’ve probably already heard about the South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, now infamous for his shouting, “You lie!” during the President’s speech on Wednesday, when Pres. Obama stated that the proposed health care reforms would not apply to illegal immigrants. But today, there was a newish twist announced.
It turns out that his outburst has been great for fundraising.
His campaign has confirmed that Rep. Wilson has raised “more than $200,000” since Wednesday night, due in part to his online plea on Thursday night for contributions. “On these issues, I will not be muzzled, I will speak up and speak loudly against this risky plan,” Wilson said in a YouTube video released Thursday evening. “The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan.”
As if that wasn’t scandalous enough, then there’s the opposite side: Democrat Rob Miller, who is running against Rep. Wilson in next year’s campaign for the Congressional seat, is alleged to have raised $750,000 since Wilson’s public accusation. He’s aiming to keep that momentum going, shooting to beat $1M in the next day or so… Pretty impressive, considering he only raised $67,000 in the first six months of 2009.
Who knew that two little words could end up prompting so many people to open up their wallets?
