Okay, this is a particularly heartless thing of me to say… but given the realities of our 24-hour news cycle, I’m insanely curious to know who is going to win the Showdown of the Week… Is it going to be Kanye’s antics at the Video Music Awards last night, or Patrick Swayze’s succumbing to cancer today?
It seemed like Kanye was bound to be the talk of the town today, with the righteous indignation his stunt caused among the chattering masses (myself included.) If you haven’t heard, when Taylor Swift won a VMA last night for Best Female Music Video, Kanye West jumped onto the stage in the middle of her acceptance speech and took the microphone from her. He told her, “Taylor, I’m really happy for you. I’ll let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”
Even at the awards ceremony, reaction was swift and brutal. Stars and celebrities loudly booed him almost immediately, once they realized it wasn’t a staged stunt like last year’s Eminem confrontation with Brüno. Not long after, Twitter blew up with famous people condemning him for his behavior.
Side-note: Kudos to singer Pink, whose update summed the matter up nicely: “Kanye West is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me.” Nicely done. I found Katy Perry’s comment “Fuck u Kanye. It’s like you stepped on a kitten” to be a bit perplexing, though entertaining.
So yes, people have been all aflutter today. I first noticed this morning, when I saw a dozen Facebook status updates about Kanye West and knew something noteworthy had happened. I’m sure it was the talk of the water-cooler today, and I even joined in some of the gossip after work today. It had eclipsed the controversy around Rep. Joe Wilson, and was bound to stay in headlines for at least a few days.
And then Patrick Swayze died, concluding twenty months of a brutal fight with pancreatic cancer.
Personally, I think Kanye West needs to send flowers to Swayze’s wife.
