On July 10, 2009, 17-year-old Zikerria Bellamy applied online for a job at McDonald’s. On July 28, she had a job interview at an Orlando McDonald’s restaurant. When Zikerria revealed during the interview that she was transgender, having been born a man but living the life of a woman, she was denied an interview.
Adding insult to injury, one of the managers called and left her a hateful voicemail stating emphatically, “We do not hire faggots.”
The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF) has filed a discrimination claim against McDonald’s. They even posted the audio of the voicemail message at their website, and added it to YouTube for good measure:
The restaurant, at International Drive and Sand Lake Road in Orlando, responded with this statement:
“Sand Lake Road McDonald’s has a strict policy prohibiting any form of discrimination or harassment in hiring, termination, or any other aspect of employment in the organization. The restaurant requires all employees to comply with local, state and federal employment laws. … The behavior of the individual in question is not reflective of the employment policies in the organization. Further, this individual acted outside the scope of his authority and was not responsible for hiring. The individual in question is no longer employed by the restaurant.”
That’s right, buddy. You lost your job because you had to be a shithead. If you’ve got bigoted or prejudiced views, that’s your business — but leave it out of the workplace. Refusing to interview someone because you don’t like their sexuality or politics or religion or disability or WHATEVER is bad enough, but taking the time to call and leave a hateful message for them afterwards is just ridiculous.
Congratulations on your unemployment, douchebag. And congratulations to McDonald’s for doing the right thing for your company and your community.
