Boys Beware!

In a training seminar today hosted by Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the facilitator showed us a 50s-era public service announcement about “the homosexual” produced with the cooperation of the Inglewood Police Dept. and the Inglewood Unified School District. Check it out:

I know this is ridiculously outdated, but even so… Wow. Just, wow. “One never knows when the homosexual is about. He may appear normal, and it may be too late when you discover he is mentally ill.”

It’s just shocking to see something like this. I’m all for being protective of children, making sure they understand how to safely interact with strangers, and so on…But this is just ridiculous.

I suppose it’s no wonder that many people who grew up in that era have a hard time adjusting to the notion that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people (as a group) aren’t any more of a threat to children – and society – than straight people.
