State Senator Roy Ashburn from California is not what you’d call a “gay friendly politician.” The Capitol Resource Family Impact scorecard rates Sen. Ashburn as 100% for never once voting in favor of any LGBT-equality legislation. His campaigns focus on family values, and he even hosted a Traditional Values Coalition rally.
And he was busted this week for driving under the influence after leaving a gay nightclub in Sacramento.
Yes, Sen. Anti-Gay himself was seen driving away from Faces, a drinking establishment for lesbians and gay men, early Wednesday morning. He was accompanied by someone who was neither his former wife nor any of his four children. Yes, this champion of “family values” is divorced and had an unidentified man in his car as he left the gay nightclub.
Pulled over for swerving at about 2:00am, in his state-issued vehicle, Senator Ashburn was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors: “driving under the influence” and “driving with a blood alcohol level higher than .08% or higher.”
The senator had this to say about this incident:
I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.
Call it “Larry Craig Syndrome” if you like… But I’m SO SICK of notoriously anti-gay public officials turning out to be closeted jackasses who can’t just be honest with themselves about who they are and what they want from their personal life.
