How to Train Your Dragon

On Sunday, I went out and saw the new movie How to Train Your Dragon in 3D IMAX. I’m a huge fan of the string of hit animated movies, such as the incredible Disney/Pixar film Up, so I was eager to see this new animation from Dreamworks.

I was definitely not disappointed.

Having seen a whopping score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that nearly every critic who has review the movie liked it, I was expecting it to be good… But I didn’t think I would like it quite as much as I did. Call it the curse of high expectations — I figured if the hype was that strong, the movie would almost certainly not live up to it. Fortunately I was wrong.

How to Train Your Dragon is smart, funny, and charming. Though it didn’t have as many “Awwww!” moments as Up and didn’t have a tear-jerking scene in there anywhere, it did have several sweet and tender bits, and a lot of laugh-out-loud pieces as well. The best part of the film, for me, was definitely the flying sequences — in those moments, the movie feels like one hell of a good action flick.

The 3D experience for How to Train Your Dragon was excellent, resembling the 3D success of Avatar and avoiding the “That was 3D?” experience of Alice in Wonderland. This is a great movie to go see in IMAX 3D, if there’s a theatre near you that offers it.

And on the off chance that you have no idea what movie I’m talking about, here’s a trailer to hook you:
