Monday’s Apple WWDC announcement about the new iPhone 4 device included a fantastic new feature: FaceTime. With this, iPhone owners can have a telephone call with each other using live video (thanks to the front-facing camera) through WiFi connections. Here’s a great video demonstrating:
The niftiness of this feature aside, let’s focus on the MARKETING for a second… How brilliant was that? The baby crawling on the bed? The little girls playing? The elderly couple watching a young woman (their granddaughter?) showing off her graduation gown? The soldier watching a woman (presumably his wife, judging from the rings) having a sonogram? The hearing impaired couple signing to each other?
And of course, throughout it all, we’re listening to music instead of hearing their conversations — but we intuitively understand the context of what’s happening, which perfectly demonstrates the value of video telephone calls.
I’m such a geek — why can’t I just be happy about a new feature, rather than gushing over the ad?
