Universal Studios

After the madness we experienced at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter exhibit at the Islands of Adventure theme park, it was time for something a little less insane the following day: the original Universal Studios Orlando theme park.

A whole lot smaller lines, a whole lot more to do.

There were relatively few people there, since most Universal-going people that weekend were hitting up Islands of Adventure next door. We got straight in, no waiting, and went on ride after ride. A quick list of our activities, from memory:

  • Blues Brothers Show
  • Disaster! A Major Motion Picture… Starring You
  • Horror Make-Up Show
  • Jaws
  • Men in Black Alien Attack
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Shrek 4-D
  • The Simpsons Ride
  • Terminator 2: 3-D
  • Twister… Ride it Out

MUCH better than I remembered as a kid.

Some of them were very dated, especially Jaws and Terminator 2, but others were fantastic. Simpsons in particular seemed to be a favorite among our group, and Shrek was good too. The Disaster filming was a very pleasant surprise – definitely check it out.

Revenge of the Mummy was entertaining, but not worth the very long line. It was, however, a roller coaster that didn’t make me queasy for hours afterwards, so thumbs up there.

Men in Black had a very entertaining line, which snaked through an exhibit for the better part of an hour… Then the ride broke down shortly before we got up to the front. Fail.

The Horror Make-Up show was cute, because of the risqué banter between the folks onstage. Very little information shared in the presentation, which was disappointing.

And finally, the Men in Black concert was a great way to start the day, especially with a beer at 11:30 in the morning. Big win there.

Between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, we had a hell of a weekend. We upgraded to annual passes, so we’ll definitely be back. Wanna join us?
