Sharron Angle vs. the First Amendment

Sharron Angle is a Republican candidate for Senate from the state of Nevada, and she’s got a bone to pick with Democrats in Congress. Specifically, the candidate (allegedly a Tea Party favorite) thinks that the federal government is in clear violation of the First Commandment.

Not the First Amendment, mind you. The First COMMANDMENT of the Bible.

In an interview with TruNews Christian Radio‘s Rick Wiles on April 21st, Angle had this to say:

“And these programs that you mentioned — that Obama has going with Reid and Pelosi pushing them forward — are all entitlement programs built to make government our God. And that’s really what’s happening in this country is a violation of the First Commandment. We have become a country entrenched in idolatry, and that idolatry is the dependency upon our government. We’re supposed to depend upon God for our protection and our provision and for our daily bread, not for our government.”

So, for the record… we don’t need a military, because God will protect us. We don’t need government helping to grow our economy, because God will provide one. And if we’re in trouble and can’t afford to feed or shelter ourselves, we shouldn’t worry, because that just means God must not want us to eat.

I just keep repeating to myself, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” I have no right to begrudge this woman her lunacy, but she has no right to impose her religious beliefs on government policy either.

Still, some of the things she says in the full interview scare me. You can read the full transcript online, if you’re intrigued. But if it scares the hell out of you, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
