Rick Santorum vs. Spreading Santorum

I’ve mentioned advice columnist Dan Savage’s brilliant campaign to vilify the name of conservative politician Rick Santorum before, and have snickered as Savage lampooned public figures who spread hatred toward the gay community. But an article this morning made me laugh out loud.

Rick Santorum sure would like to escape the marketing campaign of “Spreading Santorum” so he get get back to politics without people associating him with anal sex.

In an article entitled, “Rick Santorum’s Anal Sex Problem” writer Stephanie Mencimer shares the politician’s struggle to move past Dan Savage’s act of naming “the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex” after Santorum.

After Mr. Santorum associated homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality back in 2003, noting that marriage has never included “man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be” as his rationale for why same-sex marriage should not be legal, Savage and his band of loyal followers Google-bombed the name “Santorum” and the Savage’s “Spreading Santorum” website so much that Google now associates the man’s name with that website. As you might imagine, this has proved quite embarrassing for a conservative politician from Pennsylvania who is horrified by all things gay.

With Mr. Santorum allegedly eyeing a run for President of the United States, several public image experts have weighed in on how he could attempt to get out from under the stigma associated with his name. But the bottom line is, Savage has probably done a good job of permanently tainting the name of Santorum.

Having said that, let’s make sure we keep it that way, shall we? Google the word “Santorum” and select the website http://www.spreadingsantorum.com from the available options, would you? It only takes a moment, but it will help keep the Google search engine focused on that site as the most relevant connection to the word Santorum.

Happy Googling to you!
