So, I’m not what you would call a connoisseur of drag performances. Though I used to work at a bar in Florida that had drag shows every weekend, and though I’ve been to plenty of drag shows in various gay bars around the country, I just never really found that they were “my thing.” Having said that, there’s a recent performance that I just HAVE to share with you.
Petra’s Piano Bar did a “Men of Petra’s” drag show months ago, featuring the male members of the staff that weren’t drag queens, as sort of a goof. When the staff showed up and put on a surprisingly good show, the management saw some potential, and a new series of shows was born.
Fast forward several months, where “Men of Petra’s” has expanded to become an amateur drag competition featuring both men and women lip-syncing (or in some cases, singing!) and dancing to songs onstage dressed as someone of the opposite gender. Yes, they have both drag queens and drag kings in the competition.
This past weekend, Petra’s hosted part two of the semi-finals for a months-long competition, and Sal had a special guest performance at the end of intermission.
Yes, this is my boyfriend. Dressed as a woman. Singing and dancing. And, in my humble opinion, rocking it out.
I’m still not signing up to go see drag shows every weekend, and wow do I hope that this doesn’t become a regular thing for Sal. But damn, that was one hell of a good performance. 🙂 Hope you enjoy.
