It was bound to happen sooner or later… I drew my first blood on a raft today, when we hit a rapid sideways and one paddler fell on top of another, driving the victim’s T-grip into his own face. And of course, it had to be SAL that got bloodied.
Naturally this blew my confidence for a good half-hour, and I didn’t want to be anywhere near guiding a boat (or even out on the water at all.) Of all the people, why did it have to be Sal that got hurt?!
But after he took a quick break to ice it and then took another run or two with us on the water, I took a deep breath and got back to guiding… and had a pretty awesome run down the Competition Channel, including taking Big Drop backwards on a beautifully clean line flyin’ straight over the rapid. Before long I had a goofy grin on my face, was shouting and cheering spinning us out of rapids, and a good chunk of my lost confidence back.
It also made me feel better when Sal promised that if anyone asks, he’ll tell them that he didn’t do the dishes when he was supposed to, and I was forced to teach him a lesson.
