If you’ve read any of my GatorUptown.com rants about whitewater rafting or my Guide School experience, you know that I think it’s absolutely phenomenal. Well here’s your chance to get in on the action: the new Raft Guide School dates for 2012 have been announced.
Seriously, you want to do this. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
From the USNWC.org website:
Become a professional river guide at the largest man-made whitewater facility in the world. The U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC is seeking full and part-time seasonal guides starting spring of 2012. No prior experience is needed.
From the classroom to the river, our top-notch instructors will teach all of the necessary skills expected of a professional raft guide. Upon completion of guide school, preferential consideration will be given to top graduates in order to complete USNWC’s qualifying check-out process. Upon qualification, a fun, physical, and customer interactive job awaits.
All employment offers are subject to successful completion of a background check. USNWC is a drug-free and smoke-free establishment.
Benefits of being a guide:
- Free water time and climbing
- 25% off Outfitter’s Store items
- 25% off River’s Edge Bar & Grill (excludes alcohol)
- 25% off instruction
- Discounts and access to pro deals on gear
- Guide School Tuition Reimbursement Program
- Starting Pay Rate of $9.43/hour
Tuition costs $175, and it’s hands-down the best six days of fun and adventure that you’ll ever spend. Worth every penny, even if you don’t end up becoming a full-time paid raft guide. (You WILL need to buy your own equipment, including a helmet, personal floatation device, and a few other things, but you get a great discount and it’s absolutely worth it.)
Here’s how you can get more information:
- Phone: 704.391.3900 ext. 8

Or, you can register now on the Raft Guide School website.
If you’re unconvinced, may I suggest you re-read my joyous accounts of Raft Guide School from last Spring?
Charlotte rafting friends, believe me when I say… you want to do this. Sign up for this class and go do it, whether you take a full week to do it or do one of the weekend schools. You’ll thank me for pushing you to do it, trust me.
