Late night crash

Living in New York comes with the expectation that you’re going to see some crazy stuff from time to time… but I was completely unprepared for this scene last weekend. A loud crash at one o’clock in the morning, and I discovered this waiting for me in front of my apartment:

Oh yes… that vehicle is on its side, on a one-way street, having clipped one car and then overcorrected and crashed full-on into another, flipping over in the process.

By the time I got down there, the driver had already crawled out and taken off, allegedly pretty drunk from the description of other observers. It was really a very jarring sight, because my mind just couldn’t seem to process the idea of a car in the middle of the street, on its side, facing perpendicular to a narrow one-way street:

Cops and firefighters got there almost instantly, and after determining that the driver had gone and that no-one was in any immediate danger, they got a police truck out there to pull the vehicle upright:

Going…

…going…

Gone!

Strangely, after they got it righted, they all left and the damn thing sat there for an hour. Finally a tow truck came and hauled it away.

Still, it wasn’t until the next morning that I realized just how bad the collisions were.

First victim, pretty banged up

The REAL victim here

And of course, let’s not forget the innocent tree that came away injured:

Poor tree was just mindin’ its own business…

The driver was coming home on the evening of Friday May 4th (also known as the morning of Saturday May 5th) so one can only assume that he was drunk out of his mind if he thought that running from the police was a good idea.

Just goes to show… don’t drink and drive, not even coming home from a Cinco de Mayo party.
