Kevin 3.0

Two years ago, I embarked on a quest that I called “Kevin 2.0“. I had realized that I was being very negative, complaining frequently, and sharing bitter, cynical messages with the world. I announced a rebranding effort to put more positively out into the world.

Well, friends, it’s time for another upgrade: welcome to Kevin 3.0.

There have been gigantic changes since Kevin 2.0. I’ve left my job of twelve years. We left our home of seven years, and moved a thousand miles from New York to West Palm Beach. We’ve created a new home, and are building a new life down here. I’ve started a new job — indeed, a new career — as a full-time professor. My sense of identity is profoundly altered, as damned near every major aspect of my daily life has changed (except for my husband, who’s still hanging in there, bless his heart).

But I still have more changes in the works.

Working from home for two years, I’d allowed myself to fall into something of a rut. I’d go days — sometimes weeks — without venturing out and doing something that wasn’t work. I didn’t socialize much, which is appalling for someone like me who craves social contact. I became a bit of a hermit, connecting to the outside world almost entirely through computer and phone screens.

These past two weeks, I’ve been driving to campus every day of the work week. I’m meeting new people through my job, and I’ve even elbowed my way into my husband’s social life with his new work friends. I’m sharing meals with the next door neighbors, going to the movies, and even going to the beach. (Yes, I took my shirt off at the ocean, and SeaWorld didn’t show up with a net.)

These are good starts, but I need to keep the momentum going. I’m looking forward to new adventures, with new friends and old. I’m excited about building a life outside of the Internet.

Don’t get me wrong: I still miss NYC. I miss my friends, my restaurants, my theaters, etc. But I’m here, and I’ll be here at least a couple of years, so I’m going to make the most of it. I’m going to rock my new job, own my classroom, and charm some new friends. I’m going to find the things that I love about my new life down here, and I’m going to enjoy the hell outta them.

Today is the first day of the Fall term on my campus, and I’m heading in shortly to teach my first on-campus class at the university. I have a spring in my step and a smile on my face. About 50 students are going to meet their professor today, and he’s going to be very happy to be there with them.

Kevin 3.0 lives in South Florida, works an exciting job teaching at an amazing university, has a wonderful home with an incredible husband, and enjoys spending time with friends he cherishes and is fortunate to have in his life. He’s going to venture out of the house, try new things, explore new places, and have new adventures. Kevin 3.0 is going out there and making South Florida his bitch.

Kevin 3.0 will make a positive impact in the lives of family, friends, colleagues, and students, damn it.

Let’s do this.
